Laughing Kookaburra


Today just near my brother David’s place 75 kms West of Melbourne  at Bunding

I didn’t record the sound below but one fellow in Queensland is very lucky

    1. It is a sound that you sometimes hear in the bush, and particularly if it is at all mountainous, it can be quite a few miles away and it resounds from hilltop to hilltop. And I don’t believe that anybody has ever tried to kill one. Some people shoot some birds for ‘skill’ but never a kooka.

  1. Oh great soundtrack! And yes – they could nearly take his finger off. After all, they can kill snakes with a single blow. It all takes me back to primary school and performing at Sydney Town Hall in the combined schools choir – ‘Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree . . . merry, merry king of the bush is he-e-e- . . . laugh kookaburra . . etc, etc”

  2. We sang that song in elementary school, with no explanation what we were singing about. Ma explained, made me promise to stop singing…
