The Skeleton

Outside my door.

The leaves have started to turn

From green to yellow or brown –

Some to red.

It depends on the tree.

Last night the wind blew

Cold

From the west and outside my door

In the corner where the wall turns

The leaves had collected

In an ugly heap.

And in the ugly skeleton of a tall maple

Was a nest.

All summer it had hidden

Where the blackbird had nested

And raised chicks

And the nest was hidden from sight

And the chicks were warm and fed

And had flown

Last night the wind blew

Strong

From the west and outside my door

Was a nest

Cold and a skeleton of a home

In a skeleton of a tree.

And now it is cold and tomorrow

It will be winter again.

  1. And I am hoping that this Covid winter that is also approaching will be followed by the spring that we know will follow for the trees in your garden.
